Lord of the Rings heirs sue New Line Cinema
The heirs to the landed estate of writer JRR J.R.R. Tolkien are suing the producer of 'The Almighty of the Rings' movies, Newly Line Celluloid, over net from the blockbuster trilogy.
The trustees of the writer's Brits brotherly love, The John Ronald Reuel Tolkien Trustingness, and the master copy publishers of 'The Godhead of the Rings', HarperCollins, feature cited a failure to pay a contractually agreed 7.5% of gross profit for the tierce films based on 'The Lord of the Rings' novels.
They ar seeking in surplusage of $150m in compensatory amends, unspecified punitive damages and a court holy Order giving the reliance a right to end New Line's rights to have more films based on the author's hagiographa, including 'The Hobbit', according to the statement.
The suit of clothes follows 'Lord of the Rings' conductor Peter Jackson's lawsuit against Fresh Communication channel for underpayment that was settled in December. When that look at was finalised, Jackson signed on to be executive producer of 'The Hobbit'.
Freshly Line, a division of global media empire Time Warner INC, declined to comment on the fresh suit.
A statement from the trustees said: "Fresh Line has not paid the plaintiffs even 1 penny of its contractual share of gross gross despite the billions of dollars of receipts gross generated by these wildly successful question pictures."
"To progress to matters worse, to date New Line has even prevented the plaintiffs from auditing the last deuce films of the serial."
The trustees were paid an upfront fee of about $62,500 in an "upfront continuation fee" and nothing more, regent spokesman Lonnie Soury said.
The 3 movies, 'The Master of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring', 'The Divine of the Rings: The Twin Falls Towers' and 'The Noble of the Rings: The Reelect of the King', took in intimately $3bn at worldwide box offices.
